Starting with an explanation of traditional block printing methods, this class will then move beyond to explore the joys of varied editions and nontraditional printing. There will also be a demonstration of the mysterious “reduction print” (How does one get all those colors and patterns out of just ONE block?) Come and find out!

Using water based inks and "easy carve" Styrofoam blocks; this workshop simplifies the elements of block printing. The class will include how to register prints using a simple jig and will explore traditional printing as well as the less traditional reduction print. Water based inks provide many of the surprise elements of painting in watercolor. This creative process is user-friendly, affordable and fool proof!

timeless by Judith Hilmer "Profusion" Block Print 18" x 36" (Detail)

Judith Hilmer has emerged from a background of scientific illustration and commercial art. Her work with "botanically correct" flora for natural history museum dioramas has led her from Alaska to Africa. She has earned signature memberships in the Colorado Watercolor Society and the Kansas Watercolor Society while five of her serigraphs have taken awards in Tokyo, Japan.

Her block printing is done with water base inks and without a press. Almost as much about painting as printing, these works fall into the category of "varied editions". Her skill as a painter is seen in her use of ink, with much shading, glazing and texture. The non-traditional methods and the ever-changing results keep the work fresh and always exciting for the artist.
